I didn’t know much about the islands, except there are nine of them and they’re home to Portugal’s highest mountain, Mount Pico, part of the country since the early 15th century. Although we only had time to explore the main island, São Miguel, it gave us a glimpse into the tranquil and peaceful life the locals lead. One unforgettable moment was when we arrived at our Airbnb. The owner, who lived next door, was in the middle of helping a cow give birth. We watched in awe as the newborn calf, still steaming from the warmth of the placenta, took its very first steps. The ever-present fog added an ethereal atmosphere, and the island’s lush vegetation felt as though it belonged to another era. I had never seen trees quite like those before—I recommend that you visit the Botanical Garden of Ribeira do Guilherme if you have the chance to go there some day.

Azores
I visited the Azores when I was looking for a charming romantic getaway not too far from Boston.
