When it was time to return to the U.S. after my European trip in 2016, I chose to fly with Icelandair
Iceland Air at the time offered a free layover of up to a week in Iceland—a golden opportunity to visit a place that had long been on my list. Upon landing in Reykjavik, I decided to embark on the Landmannalaugar hike, a popular and well-documented trail that suited my lack of preparation perfectly. The landscapes of Iceland were nothing short of magical, and what struck me the most was the almost complete absence of trees! Also it was June, and the sun would never completely set, which definitely disoriented me when my phone died and I didn’t have a watch!
