Along with a few friends, I decided to visit Guatemala, focusing on the enchanting Lake Atitlán, where we spent three unforgettable weeks. This enigmatic part of the world had always intrigued me. What struck me most was the warmth and honesty of the locals. Their ever-present smiles and kindness made an unforgettable impression. Life around the lake was peaceful, and the only way to travel, apart from hopping into a tuk-tuk, was by boat. We explored the main towns, each with its own unique charm: San Marcos, a haven for artists; San Pedro, the lively hub of nightlife; and Santiago, where we couldn’t get enough of the bustling food market every evening. I could genuinely picture myself spending my old age there. Yet, I couldn’t ignore the complex history of the region, with much of the locals’ land taken from them and the scars left by a long civil war. Despite these challenges, the beauty and serenity of Lake Atitlán remain unparalleled.
