Increasing Mobile Engagement by Reducing Load Time

Case Study
OCT 2015
Problem

This one is a classic. Analytics revealed a 40% drop-off rate when users loaded high-image auction pages on mobile. It was especially true for auction houses that relied heavily on nice imagery and didn’t necessarily optimize their photos while creating their catalog. Some customers even uploaded large PNG.

Hypothesis: Large unoptimized images were slowing down the experience, causing frustration.

Solution
  • Automated Image Optimization – Developed back-end algorithms to generate various thumbnail sizes for improved performance and display.
  • Efficient Image Compression – All images were automatically converted to progressive JPGs, significantly reducing file sizes without quality loss.
  • Seamless Scrolling with Lazy Loading – Introduced lazy loading for catalog views, keeping users engaged as they browsed.
  • Enhanced Catalog Creation – Implemented best practices guidance within the platform and launched an informative email campaign to educate customers.
-25%
Bounce Rate

A lot of frustration was eliminated and we noticed a significant bounce rate drop, meaning users felt more engaged.

+30%
Item Visibility

Faster loading times allowed users to browse in average 30% more lots during each of their sessions.

-1.8 Sec
Load Time

Page load times improved by 1.8 seconds in average. A game changer for customers relying on phone bidders with poor data connection.
